On Tuesday afternoon at 3.15 p.m. the fire alarm activated and the children were evacuated quickly and safely from the building. It has been brought to my attention that a number of parents were upset that children were not wearing coats.I feel I need to make it clear that this was not a fire drill but a genuine alarm (something smoking in a school oven had set off the alarm). As a school our first priority is to ensure that everyone is evacuated quickly and safely from a building. Whilst appreciating that it was a cold day outside, I believe it is much better to feel a little cold than be trapped in a burning building and suffer the possible consequences. As good fire safety practice, staff and children are taught to exit the building immediately and move to a place of safety, there is no time to collect coats etc. Once the cause of the alarm was ascertained and no immediate dangers identified then children were quickly allowed to return inside. As a school we place the highest priority on the health and safety of the children in our care and as Head Teacher I will always insist that taking children out of immediate danger is our number one aim.
